Kate's Shooting Star Purple Sapphire Platinum Engagement Ring Commission
I met with this recently engaged couple to discuss a commission for a contemporary platinum engagement ring and had separate conversations with both of them. Simon wanted Kate to be involved, so that she would get a ring that she loved, but he wanted to keep the exact design a secret, so she could have the surprise element of a traditional proposal. One thing that leapt out from conversations with each of them was how fondly they both talked of their first date where they had seen a shooting star, so obviously this needed to be the inspiration. We discussed using Tanzanite for it's mesmerizing bluey purpley tones reminiscent of the shades they had seen in the star, but it's not the hardest of materials for a ring that will be worn everyday. I therefore sourced some sapphires for Simon to look at and he picked out this wonderful purple pear shape, which has the tones of Tanzanite, but is much harder.
I sketched out several designs and we decided on the sapphire with diamonds around the bottom to emulate the movement and sparkle of the shooting star. The design changed several times as Simon asked to look at different sizes and shapes of diamond to get the right look. The result is just stunning and the couple were thrilled.
